Ed Bassmaster:
Ed Bassmaster, born Edwin Rodriguez on February
4, 1973, is a comedian and YouTube personality from Northeast Philadelphia
best known for his outrageous prank characters and hidden-camera antics. Coming
from a mixed heritage—his mother half Italian and half Russian-Jewish, and his
father Puerto Rican—he grew up in Philly, leaving school in the 10th grade
before working at jobs like AT&T retail. In 2006, he launched his YouTube
channel, where his mix of improv comedy, awkward personas, and social
experiments quickly attracted millions of fans. Over time, he built a comedic
universe of recurring characters such as Skippy, Emilio, Always Teste,
Mumbles, Ugly Face, and Zombie Face, all used to prank unsuspecting
strangers in absurd, awkward, and hilarious situations.
His channel now has nearly 1 billion views
and over 2.8 million subscribers, making him one of the early pioneers
of YouTube prank culture. Some of his biggest viral hits include the Zombie
Drive-Thru Prank (27+ million views) and the Emilio car salesman prank
(24+ million views). His success led to The Ed Bassmaster Show on CMT in
2016, bringing his characters to television. He’s also known for
headline-making stunts, such as teaming up with fellow YouTuber Jesse Wellens
in 2015 to stage the fake destruction of the Canadian hitchBOT, which briefly
fooled media outlets. Beyond YouTube, Bassmaster launched a podcast in 2019,
tours for live comedy, and continues to create content from his hometown, where
he lives with his wife Jennifer and their four children.
